This special education school and dormitory, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is equipped for children grades 8-12. It is a day school and boarding school designed to house 120 students including 50 dormers. The goal behind the design of the school is to provide a positive and enriching space for students who may struggle in a typical classroom environment. The dormitories and classrooms are surrounded with windows that take advantage of the building’s exquisite exterior with its mountain views, creating a calming learning atmosphere. So too, the furniture and material selections reflect the nature that surrounds the building. There are small classrooms, well equipped for individualized attention, as well as individual and communal study areas dispersed throughout. Areas such as the lounge and outdoor patios are designed to enhance socialization and create an enjoyable and positive ambiance for the students. With its inclusion of natural motifs, socialization and study areas, relaxing outdoor views, and elements for individualized aid and study, children who attend this school will be able to concentrate on their studies in a low-stress environment that is conducive to learning.
