NYSID to present second annual Green Design Awards
Honoring Local Organizations and Individuals at the Forefront of Sustainable Interior Environments
New York, NY – April 12, 2010 – For the second year New York School of Interior Design will present the Green Design Awards to acknowledge individuals and businesses who have made outstanding contributions toward advancing the cause of sustainable design. The awards will be presented on April 29 at a Gala Reception and Dinner at the Arthur King Satz Auditorium, New York School of Interior Design, 170 East 70th Street, New York City.
This year’s recipients include: Kirsten Childs, ASID for Design of Interior Spaces; IceStone, LLC for Interior Products; ABC Carpet & Home for Green Business Practice; and Broadway Green Alliance for Advocacy and Community. Broadway singer and actress Liz McCartney, currently in South Pacific at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, will provide entertainment. Cocktails begin at 6 pm.
• Kirsten Childs is Director of Interior Design at Croxton Collaborative Architects. Early to recognize the impact of the built environment on the natural environment, Ms. Childs played a key role in developing Croxton Collaborative's sustainable agenda. Her work has resulted in national recognition including that of the American Society of Interior Designers, whom she represented at the 'Greening of the White House' and continues to represent ASID at sustainable symposia across the country.
• Brooklyn Based IceStone® is the maker of durable surfaces crafted from 100% recycled glass and concrete. Patent-pending IceStone surfaces were developed over a five year period and are produced by an environmentally friendly manufacturing process with the goal to be the top choice for green, sustainable countertops that rival the strength of quarried stone, yet actively reduce the waste stream by redirecting glass from the landfills into their product.
• ABC Carpet and Home has been a New York icon since 1897. The largest retailer of rugs & carpets in the world, it features an eclectic assortment in a diversity that brings in the essence of nature with eco-friendly natural fiber rugs, sisal, sea grass and jute. ABC Home offers choice at the cutting edge of design, beauty and sustainability.
• Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) (formally Broadway Goes Green) for Advocacy was launched in 2008 as an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League. The BGA educates, motivates and inspires the theater community and its patrons to adopt environmentally friendlier practices into theatrical production and everyday life.

Cyphers, “The New York School of Interior Design recognizes the importance and urgency of preparing a green generation of designers and is fully committed to integrating sustainability into our curriculum, our practices as an institution, and our civic and corporate partnerships. It is clear, by their actions and deeds, that our Green Design Award honorees share our vision and our goals, and we are thrilled to recognize their achievements.”
This year’s honorees were selected by a nominating committee whose members include: Penny Bonda, principal, Ecoimpact Consulting; Tobias Holler, assistant professor of architecture and technology at NYIT School of Architecture and Design; Laurie Kerr, senior policy advisor, NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning & Sustainability; and Scott Ageloff, senior vice president of academic affairs and dean, NYSID.
The college will launch its new one-year Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Sustainable Interior Environments this summer. NYSID is also part of Mayor Bloomberg’s University Challenge to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2017.
