In 2005, Judy Frater established the first program of design education for artisans in the arid desert region of Kutch, India. It was the culmination of 35 years of working with artisans in that region. Frater recently published Artisans by Design: An Odyssey of Education for Textile Artisans in India, which tells the story of co-learning and co-creating the program through the experiences of 19 participating artisans. Each artisan profiled created a textile for the book.
This exhibition features those textiles designed and created by artisans who share ancient traditions and have learned to cultivate their own unique interpretations, in the hope of beginning a connoisseurship of textile traditions of Kutch.
