HOTEL MONO

My research started at a monochromatic hotel in Berlin, Germany. Since I've always been attracted to monochromatic interior design, I started thinking. How come I feel so calm in environments that have been stripped of color? It feels clean and never tiring. That led me to think about people that can't see color, or can’t see at all for that matter. How do they get stimulated while visiting certain environments? What brings them peace, or perhaps, excitement, when it comes to design? This gave birth to my thesis topic.

Hotel Mono, located in midtown Manhattan, in the city that never sleeps. In Manhattan, we are more aware to find an escape from the bustling city. Hotel Mono provides just that - an escape.

The first thing you see when entering Hotel Mono is a large, lit, glass oculus streaming in from the roof, six floors up. If you're unable to see, you will hear the singing of a Tibetan bowl, with the same vibration of the earth. Once you take the stair, wrapping around the bright oculus, you will arrive at the restaurant. You are surrounded by textures, textiles, and dramatic lighting. The light scent of cedarwood, violet, and bergamot will make you feel relaxed yet intrigued. The further up the hotel you go, the darker the mood. The rooms will completely bring relaxation with its' dark and quiet atmosphere.

Hotel Mono understands you, just as you understand Hotel Mono.
