How Recent NYSID Alum Sara Watson and Peter Ibarra Landed Their Dream Jobs
Sara Watson and Peter Ibarra
Securing a design job at a respected firm right after graduation is a goal shared by many student designers, and for Sara Watson '24 (MFA1) and Peter Ibarra '24 (MFA1), this dream became a reality. Watson has joined the prestigious Studio Sofield as a junior designer, contributing to the firm’s award-winning designs. Meanwhile, Ibarra is making his mark as a junior interior designer at The Up Studio, a dynamic, emerging firm specializing in architecture, interior, and brand design.
Both designers took full advantage of NYSID’s Office of Career and Internship Services, participating in the annual spring industry speed portfolio review. During this event, they both connected with designers from a variety of prominent studios, including those that would later become their future employers.
Ibarra describes his experience, “It was there I met my future employers and got one-on-one time with the leaders there explaining in detail my portfolio. With a strong portfolio in hand, I was able to make a good first impression, which led to me applying for their open designer position.”
Watson added that the event helped her fine-tune her portfolio to be attractive to potential employers, including Studio Sofield.
Advice for Design Students
Reflecting on their journeys, both graduates offer valuable advice for those navigating the job search process. Ibarra recommends prioritizing making connections with students, faculty, and designers during your time at NYSID as you never know where a connection will lead you and your career. He established a positive relationship with Karen Singh, Career Services & Internship Coordinator, which helped him prepare for the portfolio review.
Watson emphasizes the importance of dedicating time and effort to perfecting both your portfolio and resume. Although it can be challenging to balance job applications with the demands of completing a thesis during the final semester, she found that investing that time will pay off in the long run.
“As an applicant, I think my portfolio stood out from others and was memorable. I included projects that highlighted my artistic abilities and had strong creative concepts. This seemed to resonate well with firms,” says Watson.

Ibarra emphasized that every project in his portfolio is driven by a clear, compelling concept, making it easy for first-time viewers to grasp the intent behind his designs. This thoughtful approach ensures that his work is not only visually appealing but also communicates a strong narrative that resonates with potential employers.
