Erin Folan is in her final year of NYSID’s MFA-1 program. Before deciding to attend NYSID to pursue her passion in interior design, Erin received her undergraduate degree from College of the Holy Cross and worked for five years as an external auditor for Deloitte. Although making a career change was a daunting decision, Erin has never looked back.

Why did you decide to switch careers? 
As an auditor, I worked long hours doing something I was not fully enjoying. I knew I had to pursue what I was truly passionate about. Once I learned I could make a career out of interior design, I knew I had to make the switch. I can honestly say I have never regretted my decision.

What have you enjoyed most about NYSID’s MFA-1 program?
One aspect of the program I find particularly unique to NYSID is The Experiential Learning course that is offered during the summer. It gives students a reprieve from the classroom setting and the chance to gain hands-on experience in the field. The past two summers I chose to do an internship at Tara Seawright, Inc and I was able to implement what was taught in the classroom in a real-life setting.  

Did you consider studying interior design at any other colleges?
I looked at two other schools in Boston, where I was living prior to moving back to New York in 2014. I chose NYSID because of the relationships I formed at Open House and because of the school’s ideal location in the heart of New York City, which offers a multitude of invaluable resources right at my fingertips.  

Anything else you’d like to say about your experience at NYSID?
Looking back over the last two years, I wouldn't be where I am today without the expertise of NYSID’s wonderful instructors and advisors and the comprehensive curriculum of the MFA-1 program. As I begin my final year at NYSID, the tools I have been given as a designer over the past two years have given me confidence in the work I produce and prepared me for taking on the task of looking for full-time employment.
