The full schedule is listed below:

FEBRUARY

From Stud to Stalled
Wednesday, February 22, 6pm

Joel Sanders, principal, Joel Sanders Architect, will present a lecture that traces the evolution of two decades of work on gender, identity, and design since the publication of his book of essays, STUD: Architectures of Masculinity (1996). The talk will look at shifting cultural conceptions about masculinity, femininity, and LBGTQ rights over the past 20 years. Divided into four chronological sections that correspond to four cultural issues that have shaped Sanders’ writing and projects, this talk will provide the audience with new ways of seeing important cultural issues that resonate today.

MARCH

Redefining Traditional: Style for Today's Home
Spring Exhibition
March 3 – April 28, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 2, 6-8pm

This exhibition explores the theme of “redefining traditional style” through a series of design challenges for NYSID students in the courses Furniture Design, Kitchen & Bath Design, and Residential Design I, II, and III courses. The challenges were proposed by five companies—Brizo, Ethan Allen, Hinkley Lighting, Mottahedeh, and Sunbrella—to either use the company's existing products in their interiors in new and creative ways or create new products with a modern twist. The winning designs will be displayed in the exhibition.

NYSID is grateful to Traditional Home magazine for co-sponsoring this event in honor of our Centennial Celebration.

Re-imagining the Havana Home: Authentic Cuban Style Past, Present, and Future
Wednesday, March 29, 6pm

Since 2010, Cuban-American Hermes Mallea, co-founder of (M)Group, has been working with a handful of Cuban photographers to document the city’s rich architectural patrimony that was interrupted by the Cuban Revolution of 1959. In this lecture, Mallea will take us behind the scenes to visit landmark houses constructed between 1860 and 1960 highlighted in his book Great Houses of Havana (Monacelli, 2011). He will also share his passion for the authentically Cuban style homes of the city’s artists, international residents, and cultural elite featured in his upcoming book Living in Havana Today (Rizzoli, September 2017) – personality-filled interiors that are a testament to Cuban ingenuity, created while working within the constraints imposed by Cuba’s economic and material isolation.
