New York School of Interior Design announces Public Programs for Fall 2012

New York, NY – September 6, 2012 – New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is pleased to present an exciting lineup of public programs for the fall 2012 season. The highlight for this season is Jack Lenor Larsen: 40 Years, a retrospective exhibition of one of America’s foremost designers of high-end textiles, on view at the NYSID Gallery, 161 East 69th Street, NYC, from September 20 – December 5, 2012. This retrospective exhibition will give an overview of Larsen’s career and contributions as a designer, collector and author with an array of original textiles from his extensive career.

Our fall public programs calendar is filled with a host of interesting and engaging lectures, book signings, and panel discussions involving some of New York’s most respected leaders in the worlds of architecture and design. Topics include designing spaces for kids, the use of contemporary crafts in interior design, and how designers can think “outside the box” to enhance and build their brands.

A discussion on the career and contributions of innovative craftsman and designer Jack Lenor Larsen. Panelists include Hugh Hardy, principal of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture; Louis Oliver Gropp, former editor of House Beautiful; and textile designer Sherri Donghia. Moderated by Judith Gura, author and faculty member at NYSID.

Geoffrey Bradfield: A 21st Century Palace
Tuesday, October 2, 6pm

Celebrated interior design Geoffrey Bradfield – who is known for creating daring, luxurious residences and offices for an international clientele – will discuss his new book, A 21st Century Palace, the first in a series documenting five exceptional homes that he created worldwide.

Open House New York Weekend @ NYSID’s Graduate Center
Saturday – Sunday, October 6 & 7, 10am – 4pm

NYSID will be participating in Open House New York Weekend, a celebration of New York City’s architecture and design with rare access into hundreds of sites throughout the five boroughs. NYSID’s Graduate Center, which opened in 2010 and was designed by Gensler, will open its doors to the public with tours by Gensler and NYSID staff.

Helen Drutt English: Rooms of Revelation: Environments of Contemporary Crafts

Helen Drutt English – a renowned gallerist, educator, curator and leading authority on contemporary crafts – will discuss the evolution of crafts collections and show how they are presented in residences ranging from a contemporary Richard Meier modern home to an 1847 Philadelphia townhouse.

Rosalyn Cama: Designing for Healing
Monday, October 22, 6:30pm

Rosalyn Cama is the president and principal interior designer at CAMA, Inc., an interior planning and design firm based in New Haven, CT. Cama has been a practicing healthcare designer for 30 years and has worked on projects throughout the U.S., including Yale-New Haven Hospital, Baystate Health System, Dublin Methodist Hospital of OhioHealth, The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, and the University Medical Center at Princeton. She will be speaking about evidence-based design and the role of interior design in creating healing environments.

The Textured Interior: the Fabric Designs of D.D. and Leslie Tillett and the Next Generation

Museum of the City of New York and NYSID are co-hosting a special evening of presentations and conversation exploring how contemporary textile designers, fabric houses, and interior designers are approaching their work and building on the legacy of D.D. and Leslie Tillett, who are a subject of the MCNY exhibition, “The World of D.D. and Leslie Tillett.” Speakers will include Steven Stolman, president of Scalamandre Fabrics; textile designer Lori Weitzner; and interior designer Vicente Wolf. Moderated by MCNY curator Donald Albrecht. Reception to follow.

Rooms for the Younger Generation

Designing for children is not the same as designing for adults. A panel of experts will discuss the differences and will show examples of rooms and furnishings that make both youngsters and parents happy. Panelists include Aidan O’Connor, co-curator of “Century of the Child: Growing By Design, 1900-2000” on view at MoMA through November 5; Wendy Goodman, design editor, New York magazine; Penni Morgenstein, Psy.D., licensed psychologist; and Nancy Frank Breslin, cohabiTOT, interior designer specializing in children’s rooms. The discussion will focus on how designers need to think outside the proverbial box to enhance and build their brands in today's challenging environment. Books, products, television, social media and expanding your business acumen are just a few ways to solidify your design business and expand your recognition to a broader, global audience. Panelists include renowned interior designers Thom Filicia, Suzanne Kasler, Amy Lau, Amanda Nisbett, Campion Platt, and David Scott; moderated by design expert and author Susanna Salk.

Linnaea Tillett: The Practice of Everyday Light
Thursday, November 15, 6:30pm

Linnaea Tillett, founding principal of Tillett Lighting Design Inc. and daughter of renowned textile designers D.D. and Leslie Tillett, will speak about her early influences and her innovative approach to lighting design in the city – indoors and out. She is recognized internationally for her deep understanding of how lighting affects human emotion and behavior. Local projects include The Battery, Brooklyn Navy Yard Visitors Center, and numerous private residences. Presented in partnership with the Museum of the City of New York in conjunction with the exhibition, “The World of D.D. and Leslie Tillett.”

Clive Aslet: An Era of Elegance, the Edwardian Country House from 1890 to 1939

The Royal Oak Society and NYSID are co-presenting a lecture by award-winning writer and journalist Clive Aslet. He will be speaking about his latest book, An Era of Elegance: The Edwardian Country House from 1890 to 1939, a tribute to the magnificent country houses built in Britain that have often been seen as the last monuments to a vanishing Edwardian age, recounted in such dramas as Downtown Abbey and The Forsyte Saga.

Designing the Winter Landscape: From Private Gardens to Public Parks

Though snow may coat the landscape, winter can bring new beauty to garden foliage.
The special character of some exceptional gardens will be discussed and illustrated by the celebrated people who design and nurture them. Jack Lenor Larsen will speak about the gardens at LongHouse Reserve; Juan Montoya will discuss his gardens in Garrison, New York; and Thomas Balsley of Thomas Balsley Landscape Architects will talk about projects for Chelsea Waterside Park and Riverside Park South in New York. Aspects of 20th Century Design
Friday, December 14, 2012, 6pm

Sotheby’s and NYSID are co-sponsoring a panel discussion in connection with their December design sale. James Zemaitis, senior vice president and head of 20th-century design at Sotheby’s and a panel of experts will discuss what’s hot and what’s warming up in the market for contemporary design.

Founded in 1916, the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is New York’s only private, not-for-profit college devoted exclusively to interior design education and related disciplines. NYSID’s guiding principle is that the interior environment is a fundamental element of human welfare and the college is committed to actively improving the quality of life for all segments of humanity. This ideal is put into practice by a dedicated faculty of well-known designers, architects, art historians, and authorities in the field who guide more than 900 full-and part-time students.

NYSID offers certificate, undergraduate, and graduate programs in the field of interior design. The college is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD); is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; and NYSID’s BFA is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
