NYSID student Joung-Young Park wins IIDA Student Sustainable Design Competition

New York, NY  – May 12, 2011 – Joung-Young Park, a 2nd-year Master’s student at the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID), has won the Best of Competition award from the International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) Student Sustainable Design Competition. Her prize includes $1,200, free IIDA student membership and a trip to Chicago for NeoCon 2009.

Her project, called Brown for Green, is for a senior care center in New York City. “I wanted to build a meaningful space where people can come together,” said Park. “Two color concepts have been applied: green means the next generation and sustainable living and brown means the efforts of the adult generation while also representing eco-friendly systems and natural materials.” The building—which is located at 170 East 70th Street, the current location of NYSID—includes a community lounge, classrooms, short-term patient rooms, management offices, medical services, a bamboo garden inside the building, as well as a roof garden.

Some of the sustainable design elements include solar-oriented windows, walls covered by photovoltaic cells, a gray water system, dual-flush toilets, and the use of building materials such as gypsum board, straw, bamboo, cork and rubber.

The designs were judged for innovative character of the overall design, invocative and responsible use of materials, practical application, visual comfort and sustainable material application. All winners will be featured in the Spring issue of Custom, IIDA’s newsletter.

“Joung-youn Park reminds us once again that interior designers have a very important role to play in sustaining the resources of our planet,” said Scott Ageloff, NYSID’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean.  “Ms. Parks’s project successfully marries a green approach to concerns for function, aesthetics, and sensitivity to the needs of special populations.  We are proud of her work.”
