The National Museum of Brazil was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2018. It is now a shell of what it once was, all the insides of the building were destroyed, including the ceilings and rooftop as well as its vast collection. My thesis project recreated this historical building preserving what was left of it. This ruin renovation project uses contemporary elements that also reflect the rich nature and history of Brazil and the building itself, which was originally the residence of the Portuguese royal family when they left Portugal during Napoleon’s invasions. At the time Brazil was a colony of Portugal exporting an enormous amount of gold and gemstones to Europe.
