Predicting 2020 Design Trends is a bit poetic - as we enter the third decade of the 21st Century, we will be looking backwards at history. I look at it as not so much of a trend, but more of returning to our decorating roots by embracing tradition and antiques while welcoming modern pieces, colors, art, and of course technology!

We are already seeing a fresh curiosity in antiques with young couples shopping and exploring. One of the most popular items being purchased right now are antique chests of drawers or commodes. Coupled with a contemporary rug, modern art and a chic lamp, the mix creates a unique vignette.

And who wouldn’t want to invest in antiques? One-of-a-kind furniture that is eco-friendly (recycled!), immediately available (as opposed to an 18-week lead time), with no toxic glues and chemical varnishes - or if they did, they ‘off-gassed’ 100 years ago, sounds like a logical purchase to me! Antiques add instant character, soul and a story that make every room unique!

With Instagram in particular, it’s easy to post historic references that inspire. I find that we are already looking back in time for inspiration and precedent. A classical foundation has been the basis of the beautiful versions of maximalism that we see every month in our print magazines. Fabrics, rugs, colors, layers, objects – all tickle the eye and create that cozy room!

Tradition is important – history defines who we are. 2020 should bring more of this movement so let's create our own tradition with the mix of old and new. Time marches on and timeless interiors are guaranteed to endure the test of time.
