In celebration of our 100th anniversary, NYSID invited its students to help redesign the student lounges at the 70th Street location and the Graduate Center on Park Avenue South. The challenge encouraged students to create unique spaces that would embody and enhance the NYSID college experience for themselves and for future NYSID students. More than 50 students participated in 15 teams guided by NYSID faculty members Lissette Carrera, Daniel Friedman, Terry Kleinberg, Don Kossar, and Valerie Mead. The winning designs were selected by a jury, which included interior designers Alejandra Munizaga, Charles Farruggio, Kati Curtis, and Jessica Romm, editorial director at Domino magazine.

The winners of the Graduate Center competition are MFA-1 students Tom Elka, Larissa Moutrier, Christelle Muhimpundu, and Stephanie Rizzardi; mentored by NYSID instructor and alumna Lissette Carrera. Dubbed 'Cocoon,' the design is an organic space that offers comfortable and flexible seating options that can be used intuitively such as plush seating, wood textures, organic shapes, and warm lighting.

The winners of the 70th Street competition are BFA students Yingyi Chen, Vivian Rosenberg, and Rikki Tenenbaum, who were mentored by NYSID instructor and alumnus Don Kossar. They designed a multifunctional, collaborative space with comfortable furniture and a bright color palette where students can both work and relax together. The space includes writable, magnetic walls, modular seating and a private café area.
