INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

An international student advisor deals with special needs of international students, including visa matters, work permits and housing. In addition to the regular admission credentials (see Requirements/Deadlines), international students must submit the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). All students who received their education in a country in which English is not the official language and in schools in which English is not the language of instruction are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum score of 550 (paper-administered test), 213 (computer-administered test), or 79-80 (internet-based)  (TOEFL code 9185). The requirement can also be met by attending the ELS Language Centers and obtaining a certificate of completion for Level 112 (www.els.com).
  • Evaluation of academic records by World Education Service (WES). It is the student’s responsibility to provide a WES Course-by-Course foreign credential evaluation of all secondary (high school) and postsecondary (college and university) academic records. Instructions are found at (www.wes.org).  The WES evaluation is used to determine admissibility and to assess any possible transfer credit. This is required of all applicants educated in countries outside the United States, with the exception of those students educated in South Korea and Taiwan (under certain circumstances a WES evaluation may be requested by the Admissions Office for these countries). Certified English translations are required for transcripts coming from South Korea and Taiwan. Please contact NYSID’s International Student Advisor, 212-472-1500 extension 203 or admissions@nysid.edu, if you are unsure about this requirement.
  • Financial Documentation. All international students who need an F-1 visa to enter the United States must provide documentation demonstrating that the student will have sufficient funds to meet the full financial expenses for the duration of the individual’s program of study. Such documents must be current and dated not more than six months in advance of the date that the Form I-20 is issued by the international student advisor. This information is not used to determine admissibility and a decision on an application can be made without the financial documentation being received by NYSID.
  • Instructions and forms for financial documentation, including the Application for Form I-20 and the Sponsor’s Affidavit of Annual Financial Support, are available here for downloading to your computer: financial documentation (pdf)
