The priority deadline for applications for admission to the
BFA, AAS, and BID programs is March 1. After that date, applications will be
accepted on a space-available basis. Students making application for
admission after July 1 cannot be guaranteed full-time status or be eligible
for financial aid for the fall semester. The priority deadline for the
spring semester is October 1.
To apply to NYSID:
- Check the admissions requirements for the program you are applying to.
- Complete the Application Form including the essay and send it with the application fee.
- Request two letters of recommendation to be sent to NYSID.
- If needed, request your transcripts and test scores.
- Prepare your portfolio according to the admissions requirements.
- Schedule an admissions interview (not required but recommended).
Applicants are notified of admissions decisions by mail as soon as all required documents have been received and portfolio requirements fulfilled.

GRADUATE APPLICATION
The master of fine arts (MFA) in interior design is a full-time 60-credit program for the applicant who already has an undergraduate degree in architecture or interior design or in a closely related field. The priority deadline for applications for admission for the MFA program is March 1. After that date, applications will be accepted on a space-available basis. Applicants are notified of admissions decisions be mail after March 15, as soon as all required documents have been received and portfolio requirements fulfilled. Requirements are:
- Completed application form and $50 fee ($75 for international students)
- Statement of Intent describing the applicant’s academic and professional goals
- Official college transcript(s)
- Two letters of recommendation from employers, professors, or others able to judge the applicant's aptitude for graduate study
- Portfolio
Portfolio requirement:
- A portfolio of a minimum of 15 pieces of design work. Slides or photographs may be submitted.
- Applicants must have professional level of design skills that, in the estimation of the graduate admissions committee, enables the applicant to successfully pursue advanced study.
The Graduate Record Examination is not required; however, students who have taken the examination should have the results forwarded to the college. No transfer credit is accepted for the graduate program.
International applicants have additional
international requirements.

UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION

- Essay describing your reasons for applying to NYSID
- Official transcript(s): if you have no previous college degree, have an official transcript sent that indicates graduation from an accredited secondary school, or an official score report from GED and the official transcript from any secondary school you attended; if you have attended college but did not complete a degree, have an official transcript sent from your secondary school and any colleges you attended; if you have a college degree, have the official college transcript(s) sent
(college graduates are not required to send a high school transcript)
- Two letters of recommendation, typically from (but not limited to) teachers, employers, design professionals, or counselors (generally not from friends or relatives)
- ACT/SAT scores (ACT code 2829/CEEB code 0333), if graduated from high school in past five years - not required if 45 or more credits completed previously at an accredited college
- Portfolio (for BFA and AAS program)
Portfolio requirements:
- The portfolio should demonstrate the applicant’s technical and creative abilities in the fine and/or applied arts.
- Portfolio of art and/or design work should consist of at least eight pieces of varied media, showing ability in color, drawing, and (if possible) drafting.
- Otherwise, a sketchbook with at least 12 freehand sketches may be submitted (in any media, at least 8 1/2” X 11”. At least two should depict a room or interior space. Others can be a still life composition, individual object, landscape, portrait, self-portrait, or figure drawing.
- A review may be arranged by contacting the Office of Admissions (admissions@nysid.edu or call 212.472.1500, ext. 204).
- Slides may be sent if distance prevents the applicant from presenting in person. Provide clear mailing instructions for return.
Applicants who are interested in the AAS or BFA degree but do not have the required portfolio materials will be considered for admission to the Basic Interior Design program. Required credits earned in Basic Interior Design may be applied to the AAS and BFA upon acceptance into these programs. Students may apply for this change of program after successfully completing at least the first semester of the basic program. Applicants to NYSID programs who wish to meet with an Admissions advisor may arrange an appointment by contacting the Admissions office.
International applicants have additional
